TELECOMMUNICATIONS: GLOSSARY OF
TELECOMMUNICATION TERMS
This document is the hypertext version of Federal Standard 1037C,
Glossary of Telecommunication Terms, 1996.
As seen in the history illustration below, for more than two decades—and with the sponsorship of the National Communications System and the Department of Defense—the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences (ITS), of the Department of Commerce and NTIA, has had a significant role in the development of the following state-of-the-art telecommunications glossaries. Those glossaries include:
- MIL-STD-188-120, Glossary of Telecommunication Terms (1976)
- FED-STD-1037, Glossary of Telecommunication Terms (1980)
- NTIA-SP 79-14, Fiber Optics Glossary (1979)
- NBS Handbook 140, which became EIA-440A, & IEEE 812, Fiber Optics Glossaries(1979-1980)
- FED-STD-1037A, Glossary of Telecommunication Terms (1986)
- FED-STD-1037B, Glossary of Telecommunication Terms (1991)
- FED-STD-1037C, Glossary of Telecommunication Terms (1996)

This glossary represents the review and coordination with a dozen experts in as many agencies,
over a period of 18 months of meetings.
The paper copy of the standard remains the official version. This hypertext version was developed to make the entire standard immediately accessible to all who wish to use it in a speedy, nonlinear manner. For the hypertext version, color was added to the graphics, and links to nearly all defined terms were added. A "help" section, a "hints" section, and a "credits" section—as well as this "welcome" section—were added to this machine-readable version only. No substantive changes whatever were made to the paper copy of the approved standard.
