Adobe Reader and Browser Problem
You've come to this page, most likely, because you click
on a PDF file in your browser and see nothing but a blank
screen.
As far as I can tell, there is an incompatability between
Netscape 4.x and the
Adobe Reader. From what I can tell,
the plug-in that Netscape uses to trigger the viewing of
the PDF file doesn't work correctly. Sometimes this problem
also occurs with Internet
Explorer. From researching the
problem, I have several possible suggestions,
- Use an Older Version of Netscape. This is not
a terrific solution, since many new and helpful features
have been added to the latest versions of Netscape. Also,
installing an older version of software over a newer
installation is just asking for trouble. But, if you have
access to an older computer with an older version of
Netscape installed, use that.
- Use Internet Explorer. This problem does
not seem to occur as often using Explorer, although some
reports have come in that it does.
- Save the PDF file to Disk and then View it.
Right click on the PDF file link. Select "Save As" from
the pop-up menu and save the PDF file to your hard
disk. Call up your Adobe viewer and load the PDF file.
- Configure the Adobe Reader to Display PDF files Outside
of the Browser. This is the
recommended solution. When
you click on a PDF file in your browser, the PDF file will
be displayed in a separate pop-up window. The procedure for
doing this is described in the Adobe tech document,
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/78c6.htm
under the heading "Configuring Navigator to Use Acrobat as a Helper Application."
- Check the Configuration of Netscape. Some
of the steps you can take to ensure that your installation
is the most up-to-date are described in the Adobe tech
document,
